In light of the omnipotent hype surrounding Steve Jobs and Apple with the recent launch of iPad and iPhone 4, i could not help but give thought about how Apple came about achieving such incredible fanatical fanboy/girl loyalty. pledging allegiance to anything Apple, unswayed by the fact that they would need to hold their phone in a funny way so as to not block the antenna. If I were to ever want to build a business selling products, i could use a leaf out of their CRM textbooks.

After half a year of anticipation for what i'd know would be no less than a masterpiece from Christopher Nolan, Inception did not disappoint.

With highly stylized CGI-ed visuals, intricately weaved scenes to depict what a-dream-within-a-dream-within-a-dream (say whattt?!) would mean, this guy is without a doubt, at the top of his game. I'm so curious at how his mind works. This is seriously some nifty storytelling brilliance, as is Memento, although there were instances where it got so confusing and technical that I wished I was dreaming that I was watching this movie.

While trying to interpret the idea of a-dream-within-a-dream, I got reminded of my own experience of that 3 weeks ago. which of course had nothing to do with extracting or implanting ideas in someone's subconscious, but rather, i dreamt that i was dreaming. it was really weird.
in my dream, i was sleeping and dreaming of my mum on the hospital bed, all wrapped up in white cloth except her head, and she smilingly told me how she was looking forward to recovering and going home. Then in my dream, i woke up in tears knowing that that was never happening, that my dream was just a dream. And in reality, i woke with a wrenched heart and tears streaming down my face, also knowing it was never gonna happen, that my dream-within-a-dream was just a mishmash of the events i experienced 5 months ago. she was always looking forward to getting well enough to go home, but never got a chance to, and the white cloth was the torturous sight of her lifeless and cold body wrapped in it at the morgue. i knew what my dream meant. it was the worst dream ever. I don't think i've ever spoken about it, but yeah it still hurts.

copious amount of mint leaves and 1 squeezed calamansi - muddle well
ice, 2 parts Bacardi Limon Rum (credits to mah ziwei)
fill the glass with Pokka Green Tea. Stir.

FYI, the name to this cocktail has a double meaning. Go figure!

The thing i love about Tingy87 is that she's always just a call away. we'd wake up at 2pm on a saturday afternoon, have a standard opening whatsapp line, call each other and blabber nonsense for an hour before we decide to do something spontaneously. This was just another of those saturdays, one filled with a very short dress, me making her pose in a silly fashion, sweltering under the relentless sun, hideous laughters, and island cremery.

it's one of those few albums which are worthy of repeated listens from front to back, back to front, with every song delivering interesting lyrics/layering of instruments/melancholic yet upbeat feel. and of course, James Mercer's vocals!!! omg. so dreamy. same vocals behind The Shins, which i dig. i dare say it could be my new favourite indie album of 2010!

A Low Perspective

How low can/should you go with your camera when you wish to involve the lower part of random people's bodies as subjects in your photo, without looking like a pervert?

personally, i find it a lil odd to be bringing a camera and/or myself to a low level in the midst of the street or train, being pretty obvious to the people that i'm trying to shoot their legs.
eugenes says we're just conditioned to think that it's inappropriate, but really, no one will diss me or anything. well, he's got a point there. i'd say the photographer's body language and equipment plays a huge part in looking pro, and less pervertic. try contrasting that with an image of a stranger pointing his phone at you from a low level, even if the intent was perfectly harmless, and what comes to mind?? -brandishing a slap your way-

if i should be thrown a less-than-impressed stare the next time i try it, i'll try countering it with 'nice shoes!' -insert kodak smile-

P.S: as much as i admit how i'm a leg person, me shooting legs has nothing to do with it.

i find cooking rather therapeutic to the soul.
it's a treat to the 5 senses.
it takes my mind off everything else - im 101% committed to perfecting my cause
it puts my multi-tasking ability to test - tenderizing meat while yakking away on the line. lol

it's only of late that i should develop such fervour interest in it, even though i've always had the keen untapped passion for it. reason one being i'm slothing my life away and reason two being me and my sissy have nothing to eat for dinner on most days. i hate to cook for one, and she makes for a good guinea pig. she eats ANYTHING n EVERYTHING!

i'm a huge fan of cantonese-style soup,its my no.1 comfort food. i grew up on it, thanks to my grandma and my mum. so i try to make it weekly. and when i ask my sissy to critique on the soup, she'll tell me "its lacking something" "what?" "mummy's love". i know right!

tonkatsu curry rice. just made it today!

tried to replicate Macs scrambled eggs for breakfast.

its damn easy peasy.

for every 2 eggs - you add a tsp of milk and a dash of salt.

whisk the eggs until your arm feels sore, or until a consistent layer of froth forms.
heat the pan and spread a small dollop of butter
as the very last of the butter is liquefying, add the egg mixture.

the next point is the most important, as it largely determines how your eggs will look/taste
this is AKA the Martha Steward scrambling technique

wait until the first hint of setting begins. using a spatula, push eggs toward center while tilting the pan to distribute runny parts.
Continue this motion as the eggs continue to set. then Ta-dah!

tomyum soup with lemongrass/kaffir lime leaves/calamansi juice for the extra punch.

if i'm up to it, i'll try my hands at those ridiculously chi-chi sounding dishes that places a lot of emphasis on presentation and style. watch out for this space.

I've succumbed to the Ikea nesting instincts

in case you're wondering what i've been up to lately, i'll summarize it in two words - DOMESTICATING MYSELF.

1) Revamping my room
2 days in a row, i dragged my lazy ass all the way to Ikea at an industrial part of tampines to pick out my items, and somehow managed to impress myself by lifting all the flat packs from the self-serve area onto my cart. i now spot a muscle or two on my arms, i kid you not. superwoman much? It was only when i was close to checking out that i should meet an extraordinary service staff at Row 22, who went all out of his way to help me out despite having knocked off. into details, i shall not go, but given the chance to nominate him for some ikea excellent service shit, i would spare every effort in writing a flowery essay for him. so much praise for him!

New bed? check.
Shelves? check.
Lamps? check.
Mirrors? check.
Photoframes? check!!

and not too long ago, replaced old aircon which was spewing out hot air - how ironic is that. more new items - mattress! new bolster/pillows/sheets/quilt!

As for now, i'm left with finding new curtains/blinds (i can't decide), a rug and quilt cover that'll complement a black bed and a roman purple wall, and deciding on the wall decorations and figuring how to get them up. geez, its seriously so much effort but its well worth it.

but i'll tell you what takes up more effort - separating keepers and throwers. you know how hard it is to part with items which has got some sentimental value and emotional attachment to them, but are all rather meaningless. i'd sit there for a while and ponder, reminisce. then i decide...OUT!
Let go of the old ones, i've got some new ones.

i'll let you in on one interesting detail - i unearthed a load of junk from my secondary sch days and found a few sheets of a so-called 'diary'. sporadically, i used to write things on paper and keep them somewhere, somewhere from prying eyes.

One entry wrote "It's the holidays and i'm so boredzzz to death. roar. - a lot of uninteresting details - Gah.... and i can't stop thinking about him. him. yesh it's Ch*******. i can't get him out of my head..how?? i'm so pathetic like that...roar."

Seriously, FML!!!!!!!!!!
that was the most cringe-worthy thing i've read in a while (after Pee-oh-nee-muacks, that is), what with my seeming lack of ability to string a proper sentence together, my poor grammar and did i really used to use 'roar'?? not cool at all. off it went into the dumpster.

Ok back to present day.

The now junks, do not magically grow legs and walk themselves to the bin. Lugging them to the recycling bin is no mean feat.

And not to forget the cleaning up. After the Ikea guys left, it was time to get down to serious business. Mr Dust and his huge extended family that comes in all shapes and sizes, that has lodged themselves in every nook, cranny and surface possible, and in copious amounts(yes i'm that dirty and lazy)! horrors. Now, they've found a new home ie. my air passage ways. double horrors. I'm now typing with a blocked nose and swollen eyes..... how to go for convo later?? Sniff-

And to quote the narrator in Fight Club, who's sucked into today's evil world of consumerism:
"Like many others, I've succumbed to the Ikea nesting instinct."

As the decade draws to an end, I'd like to conduct a retrospective research on my soul's well-being for the emotional year ended 2009.
for the earlier part of the year, there was the tumultuous relationship that dragged my soul to hell. it was a long time coming and while I knew I was miserable, I did not know how to let go of something which I've grown so attached to for the longest time. but times have changed, he changed. wait what am I talking about, i knew he changed and I was still living in the past. while it seemed that I appeared unaffected to my friends, as cliche as it may sound, I was slowly dying inside. I mean, yeah, sure, I know how to have a good time and I'd also like to think I provide a good time to my friends, I don't like to have to put them through my tears. oh well, I only have myself to blame.

then there was the fucked results, the after months of feeling that nothing is going right for me which is better known as quarter-life crisis.

well it wasn't all that bad a year...
i did a grad trip to Aussie and enjoyed the biggest adrenaline rush ever from skydiving. some say it's better than sex but maybe reason only being they have yet to experience great divine sex? beats me.
oh wait I had to cancel the flights to Melbourne and Tasmania, no thanks to the swine of a swine flu.
I was so liberated after the breakup, like it was an emancipation of some sort.
and I made a couple of great friends this year, which I hope to keep! oh did i mention the eyecandy....

things were getting better for me and distractions of different sorts sure helped...

that is until the bomb was dropped on me today. it's news of the worst kind, and it's only good news for people who love bad news.
I can't even bring myself to say or think of it now after being in tears the entire day. there's so much to think about and do from here.
how do I gracefully accept the terms upon which this universe operates? let's save this for 2010

Monday Night Laugh

so this hawt guy was seated diagonally across us while we were having our dins at carls jr,
whom i did not notice until Ah Chan pointed out to me when i returned with our food. i would not go into details on our fervent discussion about boys and that hawt guy during dinner (read: deprived) and our giggly fit which rendered us 14 all over again and go straight to the main highlight- hawt guy announced/asked his friend out loud "shall we make a move?", and in true Ah Chan fashion, she gave an instantaneous and resounding "NO!!". they looked at us. FML.

There never fails to be an embarassing moment with her around. Take for example, the incident at PS Cafe and during ESAP lecture. First reaction is to reel in shock, second is the urge to want to bury your face from the face of earth. But it has proved to be of high entertainment value when we bring up those incidents, and oh, her 'macro guy'. Thank god for this crazy girl!

Thereafter which we headed to the gala premiere of Storm Warriors, and caught a glimpse of Ekin Cheng for like, what, a split sec? And as if New Moon wasn't bad enough, it was an ordeal to sit through this C grade movie with an A-list cast. did i mention Nicholas Tse looked really hot?

my heart broke when i saw her, so thin and gaunt. i don't ever remember her being this frail-looking. or did i not take a good look at her the last time i saw her?
her eyes lit up when she saw me. she opened the door, but before she let me in, she peered out to see if there was anyone else with me. i think she was a lil disappointed to see me alone. 'why didn't you bring your friend with you?' she asked me in canto. i was momentarily puzzled, like why would i bring my friend to see her? then it strucked me whom she really meant by 'friend'.

Talking to her was both a happy and heartwrenching affair. at times, i was trying so hard to contain my tears. i feel like sucha douchebag for not making the effort to visit her more often. all the empty promises of bringing her out. i think i should do it more often, go to her place after work with my dinner and have a chat with her. bring some hk drama serials for her to kill her time since shes almost too weak to go anywhere.

Its been nothing short of drama this week in my dept in the talking buns office.

and today, a fiery 'I QUIT!' was heard, followed by the slam of the door
no one has the luxury to breathe.

when it gets too noisy to bear, with angsty voices from my side,
and fish market style of chatter from the dept across, my best and simplest
trick to get away from it is to give the wheel on my ipod a clockwise spin.

but above that all, everyone's still nice intrinsically, so that's great.

The title is a lil tribute to (500) Days of Summer, an indie romcom which i caught today, and which i thoroughly enjoyed! Such fickleness of the heart; Such undying obsession; Such uncertainty; And a crazy thing called fate - All of what you call love. I think i feel so much for it is partly due to the music they share (Sid Vicious and The Smiths). great soundtrack there.
Anti-climax is me but the part where Summer mentioned how she met her husband "i was reading Dorian Gray and he asked me about it" strucked a chord with me... I'm not surprised at her choice of husband because personally, i'll be impressed with anyone who reads and enjoy The Picture of Dorian Gray! I don't know why Mitch said it sucked but i reckon she's right, I'm a sucker for lovey-dovey flicks.

And since i was around the area, i made a trip with CJ to my fave quaint lil secondhand bookstore and picked up Eat Pray Love and When We Were Orphans.
Thank you CJ for the haribos all the way from germany!

What really boggled me today was some people's complete disregard for their public image/manners despite their young age. We were chilling at the starbucks when this girl seated at the table next to us decided to, horrors of horrors, lift up both bare feet and aplombed them onto the table. Look at her blackened soles. Wasn't it festival of lights over the weekend, not thaipusam? and there was this guy who placed his legs on the table too, albeit with shoes on, ON HIS MACBOOK.

Top 5 List (ala High Fidelity) : Vol 1

in my humble opinion, and also the esteemed opinion of many critics,
high fidelity is possibly one of the best films to date that marries both music and love.
inspired by the film's Top 5 List, i'm gonna come up with my own Top 5s.
i'll make a sweet start with films.
here goes...

Top 5 Beautiful Mind(fuck) Movies

what i refer to as mindfuck movies, really are, sophisticated and well-made movies that
takes you on a ride. movies that make love to your mind.

1) Requiem for a Dream (the kind that fucks your mind so bad it leaves you depressed)

i blame it on the highly stylized and intense cinematography that gets dimmer and grainier throughout the movie, and the accompanying chilling scores.
put them together and it drives you crazy.
director Darren Anorofsky has another film called Pi, which is just as eerie and frustrating.

2) Memento (the kind that leaves you in a constant state of confusion)

the story is told in an unusual mode of presentation- in a reversed chronological order,
with each scene telling a different story.
the storyline is not impressive and you know how it ends right from the start. but as they say,
it's not about about the story, but how you tell the story. and Christopher Nolan does it well.
i must add it was a very ingenius usage of black & white and colour in different scenes to distinguish the past and present. oh how i love the twist at the end!

3) Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (the kind that just leaves you in utter disbelief)

this movie is bizarre. delightfully bizarre, right from the start till the end.
but it also kind of makes no sense (pun not intended)
great cinematography though.

4) Taxi to the Dark Side (the kind that leaves you disturbed for a longggg time)

it's a shocking documentary on all the harrowing details the Bush Administration
tried to cover up in the Iraq and Afghan war.
it was an eye opener, both figuratively and literally.

5) Being John Malkovich (the kind that leaves you mindblown with its originality and warpness)

i love this one so so so so much! I can't find the right words to describe this movie properly.
profoundly bent maybe? i read somewhere that they had a really hard time trying to get John Malkovich to play 'himself'. I'm glad he did.

after drinks at jouk, i returned home for a large glass of baileys and mummy's yummy soup.
all the liquid was making me feel so bloated i decided to take a walk in the dead of the night.
the cool air brushed against my skin as i walked, enjoying the soft silence, and the playful broods of kittens (the cats around my area are extremely proactive in procreation, god knows why).
I watched a mother snail and its baby snails m o v e. it was as if time and space dilated,
like nothing in this mad world affected them at all.
Times like these make me reminisce a lil about the past, or think about where my life is going, which is quite frankly, nowhere at this point in time. I need a job. And i have plans, albeit nothing spectacular.

Then my prayers were answered!

I just received a call and I got the job! 3months. perfect, its just what i need. sweeeettt.

And as for now, i'm gonna curl in my bed and continue with my book.

Combating environmental greenhouse issues via the availability of contraception to women - it is indeed a very refreshing proposition.
There is, however, in my opinion, a Catch-22 here.
Let me put this into perspective.
The article seem to suggest that the population boom in the coming years would be contributed mainly from the developing countries,
and therefore contraception should be made available to the women in those countries. 7bucks spent on providing family planning as opposed to 32bucks spent on green technologies, seems like a pretty good deal? But I doubt this will ever work out, and definitely not as cheap as 7bucks. The people firstly need to have sex education to truly understand the benefits of contraceptive. You can't force something upon them.
The implementation of education + supply of contraceptives = 7bucks per family? they think what, people only have sex 5 times a year?
And therein lies the irony of it all- the fact that the ones responsible for the bulk of global carbon emission are the G8 countries.

Vassup! My name ich Bruno and vam head to da milan vashion show!
(this brings to mind josh's obsession with imitating bruno's gay actions after he saw the trailer 4months back)

Bruno, a flamboyantly gay 'fashionista' hailing from Austria, does the most stereotypical gay actions and wears the gay-est clothes that exposes his ass, not buttcheeks mind you. Initially the jokes were promising and were genuinely laugh-worthy but after half time, the jokes get somewhat stale and repetitive. Like the first Hitler joke, it was truly funny. After that it was zzz, or maybe i didn't get it? Some redeeming scenes like the satire on the whole celebrity trend on adopting an african kid went pleasantly well with me. Like someone lambast Madonna on her copycaticity already! i liked that part where he was asked what did he trade his adopted baby for, and he gave a matter-of-fact answer "an ipod", subtly putting the message across on how Apple is taking the world by storm, even in Africa. I laughed at Cohen's deft satire on the whole get-famous-by-making-a-sex-tape-paris-hilton-way. with old wrinkly Ron Paul. Well of course it didn't happen. He looked extremely uncomfortable with bruno hitting on him and excused himself out of the room when bruno shed his hot-pants.
Although Bruno uses the same formula as its predecessor Borat, the humour is nowhere as sharp or consistent as it. There were a lot of totally witless and plain what-the-fuck moments. At the end of the movie, you get the feeling Cohen produced another movie to ride on Borat's fame and tried and tested formula. It was hard to buy the allegedly "real" movie cause some of the scenes were so obviously staged! I don't think even the star power from Bono, Sting etc helped save this tragedy of a film.
Not worth it to have paid 10bucks to catch it on a friday night!

Finally! After countless trials in trying to create an account with blogspot, wordpress and livejournal during those emotional surges that greets only in the dead of the night and falling asleep after trying so mighty hard to think of a username that is actually not taken, i've been shelving the idea of a blog until the next wave of emotional and lyrical insanity overwhelms me. This isn't gonna be all emo-nemo stuff! this is just gonna serve as an outlet for me to rant, rave and ramble on about anything and everything. Although i do foresee plenty much on music, movies, fashion and wherever and whatever the wind takes me to. I'm just hoping that in time to come, i won't be reading this and cringing my face so badly it dents inwards, as was the case when i read my 2004-5 blog.
